How to play roulette

The rules of roulette are easy, which makes it the perfect casino game for beginners as well the more experienced casino goer. This is one table game that doesn’t require much skill, unless you are an avid player who follows complex strategies of course. But for the average player, the excitement of this game lies in the thrill of pure luck being on your side.

Let’s take a look at the history of roulette first…

The first roulette ever recorded dates back to around 300 years ago when a French man called Blaise Pascal was experimenting with probability and the idea of creating a perpetual motion machine. The Roulette wheel quickly became popular in France gaining players and enthusiasts along the way. The history of roulette is steeped in legends and secrets, with some even referring to the game as the devil’ wheel – since when added together all the numbers on the wheel add up to an eerie 666!

The rules

The objective of the game is to guess the number that the ball will land on once the roulette wheel has stopped spinning. Sounds easy right? Or maybe not! There are no specific rules, as players can bet on as many numbers as they like in any given spin. Players must place their bets before the wheel finishes spinning and the dealer calls no more bets. If you can’t reach your number, just throw down the chips and tell the dealer the number you want – just like in the movies! Once the wheel stops spinning the dealer will pay out the winning number, if any player was lucky enough.

The Bets

The roulette table is split into two sides – inside and outside bets. The outside bets consist of Red or Black. This is almost a 50-50 chance of winning, the odds vary slightly because of the zero on the wheel. Other outside bets are Even or Odd which has the same winning odds as the red or black bet. Low or High bets, will the number be between 1-18 or 19-36. There are also 3 x Dozen bets – the first dozen (1-12), the second dozen (13-24) and the third and final dozen (25-36). Finally there is the column bet which allows players to bet on all 12 numbers in any of the three columns.

Inside bets are a little bit more exciting, as the pay-out ratio is a lot higher, although the chance of incurring losses is larger with these bets. To place an inside bet you can either place your chip directly on the number you choose, or in between two number, on the corner of a number touching three digits or in the middle to cover a total of four numbers with one chip. The more numbers you cover the more chance of winning there is. Keep in mind though to win the big money you need to put all your faith and chips on one number.

Manage your money

Roulette is one of the most exciting games you can choose to play in both online casinos and in land based casinos. It is also one of the games were it is most important to be able to manage your money, due to the quick pace at  which the game is played, you can find your stack of chips is dwindling away all too soon. It is important to always reserve a little bit of what you win. When lady luck is on your side and you receive a pay-out of 35 – 1 you should take those winnings and hoard away at least a little. Before starting the game, make sure you are playing with money you can afford to lose and keep your bets within your limits, no matter how tempting it may seem to chase those losses.
